This has been one of the most exciting years in the food appreciation department with all first years getting a three week taster for the subject. Each first year had a session in the unit which consisted of cookery demonstrations, health and safety, healthy eating and they also cooked themselves, in groups in the unit for the very first time. Garbally has never seen chocolate chip cookies as good before!
It was a successful session with a large group of boys keeping the subject on until Junior Certificate Level. Each of those show great skill, compassion, flare and enthusiasm for the subject. Ms. Maura Dufessy from an Bord Bia gave the Leaving Cert Applied and First year students an excellent demonstration on quick, nutritious dishes before the mid-term break. She prepared and cooked numerous dishes of high nutritional content for the boys all of which were available to taste after the session. Ms. Dufessy was very impressed with the facilities here and really enjoyed working in the top of the range facility.

It has been a busy year in the food appreciation department for our first year students’ who were taken on a trip to the catering and tourism facilities in Athlone Institute of Technology. This was a very worthwhile trip which highlighted the importance of the food industry in Ireland. They have also entered cookery competitions and had great succes.
