Junior Hurling

Jack Curley & David Shaughnessy

This year we started our campaign in January against Woodford. We had a new trainer come on board called Kevin Gavin. We were full of confidence and high hopes for the year ahead. In our first match we had good strength in all positions. However, while we put some good scores on the board, Woodford’s supreme full forward line were just too much to cope with and notch up top class scores that were the difference in the end. On the day there were good performances by Mila McGuire, David Shaughnessy and Shane Naughton. Final score was 4- 10 to 2 – 5.

While training hard we regained our confidence before facing New Inn in the new GAA grounds in Ballinasloe. We played brilliantly and in the end were victorious. Under David Shaughnessy’s captaincy we won 1-9 to 1-8 after New Inn were awarded a penalty for the last puck of the game to give them a goal.

With that win under our belt we needed victory against Holy Rosary College, Mountbellew to stay in the competition. Sadly though luck wasn’t with us and with 3 starting players unable to attend the game we were at an immediate disadvantage. We battled hard on the day even after we had Paul Dolan and David Shox have to leave the field with injuries.

In the dying minutes of the match H.R.C scored 2 points to secure their win. Final score on the day 0 –15 to 1- 14. Mountbellew went on to come out of the group into the final.

We would like to thank Sinead Kennedy for her fantastic management skills, Kevin Gavin for taking the time to train us all year and David Shaughnessy for being the team captain
