This year, two transition year students, Matthew McMorrow and Eoin Moran participated in the Debating Science Issues Competition.under the guidance of Fr. Iomar Daniels. This is a nationwide competition in which schools from all four provinces compete to reach the National Finals in Trinity College. In the first round the Connacht regional, Garbally College competed against St Raphaels College of Loughrea. Garbally prevailed after a closely contested first round. In the next round, Garbally were up against Salerno Secondary School of Salthill .
Matthew and Eoin showed much more confidence and because of this qualified for the Connacht finals.
In the Connacht finals, Garbally was up against Magh Ene College of Bundoran, Co Donegal. After a heated debate between both sides, Garbally prevailed yet again and therefore qualified for the Nationals in Trinity College on the 14th April 2011.
In the semi-finals of the competition Garbally had stiff competition from Colaiste an Phiarsaigh. By the closest of margins, Garbally College unfortunately lost.
Overall it was a great achievement to get this far and the lads would like to thank Fr. Iomar Daniels and Chairperson and Connacht Co-ordinator for the competition Danielle Nicholson, for all their support and assistant throughout the competition.
