The most important innovation in Irish education in the past fifty years was the introduction of Transition Year.
We were one of the first schools to join this new initiative and it has been a very important part of our provision over several decades.  Ms Sindy Henry has been in charge of this programme for over a decade and she ensured the highest standards were adhered to.  Mr Paul Walsh now takes over this important programme for our college. He organised a very important information evening where a past pupil Mr. Michael Duignan gave the address.  Our present third years have responded magnificently and we now have over 50 pupils registered for TY next year.
TY is a huge opportunity for our young men.  They can grow in stature, confidence and composure over the years.  Each module is designed to help the young men discover their talents, take risks and move towards adulthood.
Critical steps along the way are

  • The T.Y. Play/Musical
  • Public Speaking/Debating
  • Mini Companies
  • Enterprise initiatives/BEST competition
  • School tours – Ireland and Abroad
  • Working in partnership with Ard Scoil Mhuire
  • Setting up and running profitable enterprises
  • Food Appreciation
  • Work Experience
  • Social Action
  • I.C.T.
  • Leadership Programme
  • Extra curricular involvement.

TY is a great gift to our college.  These years help us slow down and reflect.  It brings an air of enjoyment and philosophical introspection to the campus.  The happiest students in the college are the TY students.  They literally grow before our very eyes.  We have even noticed the prospective third years changing – the very notion of joining TY is enough to activate those maturity hormones and God knows us guys need that activation.  This years group were superb.  Although small in number they more than made up for it in talent, good humour and their willingness to get involved.  We wish them well and look forward with great expectation to next years class.
